Women want rich husbands

Women want rich husbands
It is sad to think that despite all the education we give women in Singapore, we still get responses like above. There is a part of me that wonders "Why bother spending all that money on our daughters for their education? We could just marry them off to rich husbands!"

  1. LOL I read the news too. I think many men wish to have rich wives too. And without good education, they wouldn't be able to marry to rich husbands.:)
Well, at least for me, I don't see career as simply as just a need for financial stability, I think we need more things and pursuits in life other than family. Staying at home can be boring and I would feel insecure. A rich husband can really attract too many women, especially when you have never contributed much to his wealth. Rich is definitely a good thing, but achieving a women's life goals still boil down to the person himself and her own capabilities.

  2. Well I would agree with you QL. I certainly would love to marry a rich wife and do nothing but go wakeboarding and go on snowboarding trips all day.

I think what is significant is that the women interviewed are definitely educated and can make their own money, yet instead of an answer like "Well I would marry the man I love, for richer or poorer", they said they would like to marry rich. That to me is worrying for a few reasons. For one, it indicates a very materialistic attitude. If that is not the case then it suggests that despite the fact that these women can take care of themselves, they still feel insecure enough that they would like a rich husband. Judging from the way they spoke and their appearances, I would bet it stems from crass materialism. I think gender equality has a looooong way to go if a majority of women still hold this kind of mentality in a developed nation.
